5 December 2017 - The rural, mountainous province of Dien Bien has faced numerous challenges. In recent years this included both injection drug use and HIV epidemics. In 2015 the province was named as one of five in which HIV stakeholders would focus intensive efforts to increase the number of people living with HIV (PLHIV) who are aware of their status, on treatment, and virally suppressed. On November 28 USAID SHIFT joined with the Vietnam Administration for HIV/AIDS Control (VAAC) to review the province’s achievements over the past two years. They found remarkable progress. In just 24 months Dien Bien has increased the number of HIV diagnoses by 26% and number on treatment by 29%, and found that 92% of these have viral suppression. Success in Dien Bien reveals the positive impact of joint province and PEPFAR partners efforts to scale-up HIV services and comprehensively strengthen the local HIV system. Such achievements are vital to identify effective epidemic control models which can be replicated in Vietnam and beyond.
